I knew Nikkie was going to visit her mama Saturday morning, and since my mama was working, I told Marcus everything on Friday, and he invited me over to his place for the day. I was so nervous and excited. I didn’t know what to do with my hair, what to put on, or anything. Basically, all the stuff I could have used Nikkie’s advice on if I weren’t keeping it a secret from her. I really wasn’t trying to impress him and decided to stick to what I knew; tight jeans and a cute tee with some sneakers. I wanted to get my hair in some “Poetic Justice” braids, but Dina didn’t want to pay for it, so I was stuck with my hair. I hated doing anything to it because it was so curly and thick, so it was usually in a bun or blown out straight. I knew I was going to see Marcus today so I took the time to blow it out last night. I knew I looked older when it was straight, but it was easier to throw it up and keep right on going.

We agreed that I should take the bus to a central location, and he would pick me up from there. I was on pins and needles because I was doing all kinds of things I had never done before, starting with riding the bus, sneaking around to go chill with my principal, and I was loving the feeling. It was like a sense of freedom that I had never experienced before. I couldn’t stop smiling, and I didn’t know why. I had to look online to see how the bus schedule worked. It wasn’t as complicated as I thought, because surprisingly, there was a schedule posted at every stop. When I left the house it was almost 10am, but I wasn’t pressed for time because I was only catching the bus to the transit station, and Marcus was going to pick me up from there.

The ride was one I would never forget, and I found it to be most amusing. A young woman got on the bus with me, and she had three kids with her. I offered to help her because they seemed to be a bit unruly, and she had a small infant with her. The kids were jumping up and down and climbing all over the seats. The lady put her headphones on and ignored her kids. I sat on the right side of the bus and watched her not say anything to them at all. I noticed a middle aged black woman sitting a few seats ahead of her, and one of the little boys pushed her. She looked to the young mother to do something, and when she didn’t, the woman got up out of her seat and spanked the little boy and told him to sit down and not to move again, which surprisingly, he did, and his little sister did, too. I was shocked because that was what caused the young mother to get up out of her seat.
